I felt a mix of adulation and envy and wondered how many hours she had practiced this routine in front of a mirror. I vividly remember watching her hands - her movements were so deliberate, staged and precise. Hoping to cool down just a tad longer, I pointed to something blue on a shelf and watched as a young lady presented - as only an Hermès Sales Associate can - a huge 35 x 35 piece of silk. The air conditioning inside Hermès was a pleasant change from the heat outside. Wandering the streets of Paris one summer, my introduction into this world of luxurious silk began with a single purchase I could ill afford - I literally stumbled into a Hermès boutique and onto this collectible. Many popular Hermes design are hard to find, especially brand new, in chiffon and/ or twill silk. Hermes designs are often seen for decades, sometimes available in different color schemes. Hermes scarves are mostly available on a printed twill silk, a large 90x90cm/ 36x36' square twill silk foulard and 140cm x140cm / 55' x 55' extra large shawls. I’ll be asking for a yearly modest donation to offset the fees this incurs, but that’s for later. I do enjoy my involvement on this project – it’s now been a work in progress for over 15 years. Financial donations are welcome as well, to offset costs involved with such a graphics-intensive catalogue.
