![]() Because no matter what this girl is singing, she always sounds good. We liked moody Ellie Goulding from Halcyon, but whether Goulding decides to stay indie, tweak her aesthetic or do, well, whatever she wants in the future, we support her. The song was written by Ryan Tedder, Ellie Goulding, Greg Kurstin, Noel Zancanella and Brent Kutzle, while production was handled by Kurstin and vocal production was done by Tedder. It never felt like her songs were made with a ranking on Top 40 radio in mind. 'Burn' is a song by English recording artist Ellie Goulding from Halcyon Days (2013), the reissue of her second studio album, Halcyon (2012). Goulding's music has always fallen somewhere underneath genres like "synthpop," "dreampop," "indiepop," etc., but her music always felt raw and honest, like a combination of pop and soul. The video almost looks like a Levi's commercial, but there is no denying that the visuals are beautiful. In it Goulding dances in a field (and maybe also on an airport runway), hundreds of young starry-eyed dancers join her to look up at the sky and there are lots, and lots, of lights, which are kind-of her thing. The music video for "Burn" follows the Top 40 pop formula to a T. The newest song from the indie UK singer is poppier than her previous ones on Lights and Halcyon, but "poppier" doesn't necessarily signal a musical shift for the singer, does it?Īll lights point to very possible. And while these songs can sometimes evoke other major players in her genre, she makes Max Martin’s signatures feel personal, making a mature pop record that feels like a natural progression.Who is Ellie Goulding? After "Burn" we're not really sure. Her evocative storytelling and ability to craft great dance music is all here, but repackaged as something more emotionally tangible, ditching feel-good EDM lyrical logic for realness. And might I remind you that this is the person who wrote "Burn".ĭelirium grounds Ellie Goulding’s penchant for spectacle in tightly-written pop songs. ![]() Delirium manages to be a cool, dramatic pop album that rarely hyperbolizes what love is all about. A track like "Codes" might be dressed up in sexy language but the sentiment is clear: can we please put a label on this? "When love’s not playing out like the movies/ It doesn’t mean it’s falling apart/ Don’t panic," she assures on the stand-out "Don’t Panic", whose musical-box quality makes it sound like a polished Lights-era throwback. Nobody’s shaking off haters, bemoaning that same old love, or asking that you don’t tell your mother that you, uh, made out with someone? Granted, Delirium is fun, but the mood is upfront, Goulding’s romantic propositions more realistic demands than adolescent, yearning questions. "We got other things we can do with our," she sings flirtatiously in the verses of "Codes", stopping for a beat, before drawing out "tiiime" into a high-pitched lilt, but she moves into a punchy, shouting sing-song for the chorus.Īside from a little well-done sass ("You were talking deep, like it was mad love to you/ You wanted my heart but I just liked your tattoos") on the album’s single "On My Mind", there’s an adult sophistication to Delirium. Her voice is fullest in the jangly ballad "Lost and Found", where she keeps her straightforward vocals at the forefront. Still, even when the songs here evoke other hits, they’re still bangers in their own right.Īnd Goulding’s signature vibrato and energy make even the more trend-chasing songs on the album fully hers. The bubbly, "I’m sticking to you like glue" doo-wop of "Around U" feels particularly out of place among Delirium’s darker, deeper tones, playing like a better fit for Meghan Trainor than Goulding. "Keep on Dancin’" is a more minimalist sibling to Adam Lambert’s Martin-produced hit "Ghost Town" and while "Something in the Way You Move" might be a mighty fine song in a vacuum, Selena Gomez has already done it with "Me & the Rhythm". Elsewhere, she inches back to her dance music roots on the sultry house-leaning "Don’t Need Nobody" and the marriage of a scratchy acoustic loop with techno on "Devotion".īut while the best tracks here are the ones that transcend and build on pop trends, a few others merely copy them. TION or Taylor Swift’s 1989, with gushing vocals and Moroder-kissed synths on tracks like "Codes" and her Fifty Shades of Grey song "Love Me Like You Do". ![]() At times, the record exists in the same '80s-pop wannabe universe as Carly Rae Jepsen’s E While Halcyon was a dark collection that flitted between club-ready synth-pop and soulful, orchestral ballads, Delirium dives head first into the former with confidence. ![]() And Goulding, who went from being famous only in the UK to performing at the White House, very much deserves at this point in her career to have a third record fit with all the big pop trimmings. But after flirting with indie dance, then Calvin Harris and Starsmith-produced EDM, Goulding is adding some Swedes to her arsenal for Delirium: Max Martin, Carl Falk, and Peter Svensson, to be specific.

Instead, it seems that the disk’s A side has various data that has to be loaded in for the game to get started, then draws data from the B side while you’re actually playing. Thankfully, this didn’t mean she was already half-way through a game that was only going to be 60 seconds long. She’d been playing for less than 30 seconds, though, and didn’t expect the flip-over point to come so soon. “I’ve transferred here because we had to move for my dad’s job,” the character explained, “and today is my first day,” As Ikuna hit the button to advance the text, she wondered what sort of colorful classmates she’d meet, when suddenly…įDS disks are double-sided, and so Ikuna had figured she’d be prompted to flip it at some point during the game. The on-screen graphics and text told her that she was playing as a teen boy transferring to a new high school. Ikuna inserted the disk, turned on the system, and after a loading screen… ▼ Even the strange indention on the plastic case near the tip of Nakayama’s nose couldn’t erase her charismatic aura.įDS disks are officially called “disk cards,” and this one is a bright blue, with “NINTENDO” written in relief at the top. Not only is it a game on a discontinued medium with Japan’s sweetheart from nearly four decades ago, the then 17-year-old Nakayama appears on the cover holding a corded landline phone receiver that’s startlingly large by today’s standards. Released in 1987, Idol Hotline-Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School, or “ Idol Hotline-Miho Nakayama’s Heart-throbbing High School,” is now a time capsule in multiple ways. ![]() In total, almost 200 games were released in FDS format, but since Ikuna was completely new to this corner of gaming, she simply picked out a 580-yen (US$5.30) game that had the most attractive cover, which featured the attractive face of top ‘80s idol Miho Nakayama. Once she got to the electronics district, she made her way to one of its many shops specializing in great games of yesteryear. Luckily, though, SoraNews24 headquarters is in downtown Tokyo, which means it’s just a short train ride to the greatest retro game hunting grounds in the whole wide world: Akihabara. Unfortunately for Ikuna, she didn’t find any Famicom Disk System games lying around the office. While it’s possible to leave the Famicom main unit and the FDS disk reader side by side, most people chose to stack them, like this, to save floorspace. The disk reader, meanwhile, attaches to the back of the Famicom via a cord, and has another for its own AC adapter. The FDS is actually a pair of add-ons, one of which is a RAM adapter that goes into the Famicom’s cartridge slot. It’s a Famicom peripheral, and so it has to be used in tandem with the base system. Released about two and a half years after the Famicom’s debut, the Famicom Disk System, or FDS, for short, isn’t a stand-alone gaming console. The mystery was cleared up, though, when she examined the front of the red-cased box and saw the words “Nintendo Family Computer Disk System” written there. Ikuna had never seen the device before, and with the golden age of the Famicom being before her time, couldn’t imagine what it was. So to celebrate, our Japanese-language reporter Ikuna Kamezawa decided to slip into the SoraNews24 headquarters conference room, which also happens to be where the company Famicom is, to play some old-school games.īut when she got there, she noticed something else on the shelf where the Famicom is kept. ![]() July 15 marks 35 years to the day that the Famicom, Nintendo’s 8-bit video game console that became the Nintendo Entertainment System in its overseas form, went on sale in Japan. 35 years ago today, the Famicom everyone knows and loves went on sale, but what about its often forgotten upgrade? ![]() When it premiered, the reviews were brutal. ![]() But we weren’t raised in the Jewish faith.” When explaining his heritage, he said, “My grandmother’s part Jewish, which makes my mother and myself Jewish, by blood. There’s some really surreal dialog in this game, and most of the Outers are incredibly strange people. It’s delivered in emails from the various powers, in conversations between mercenary Outers, or in briefings from your AI controller Four. Humanity has an established a cordon around the crash site, and a trio of corporation-states hire mercenary Outers to protect their facilities from the Immortals and to shift the balance of power between the corporations as they extract valuable resources from the site of the moonfall. ![]() Especially evolved AI, known as Immortals, are seemingly able to corrupt the machines humanity built to protect itself and turn them against their creators. Seemingly as a consequence, AI all over the planet began to rebel against humanity. Daemon X Machina takes place on a devastated Earth, following an event called the Moonfall - in which a chunk of the moon crashed into the planet’s surface. The slow transformation of your Outer into a cyborg is thematically appropriate for the game’s story. It’s easily the most consistent way to spend money for upgrades, although it makes your intricately designed create-a-character look incredibly stupid with metal bits bolted all over. That cash can be leveraged to customize your pilot, known as an Outer, with various perks. At some point I just started finding parts and just selling them for cash. Most of the parts and weapons you get are harvested from fallen Arsenals, and while there is a store, it requires extensive engagement with a research system in order for there to be anything worth buying. There’s some variety in weapon types, but it feels like at some point I plateaued. That’s where the customization so central to the game struggles. I’d love to build for combat using energy swords, because I mean who wouldn’t, but I found they weren’t nearly impactful enough to justify it. ![]() Your Arsenal is at home both on the ground and in the sky, and I leverage my boosters to move around my foes while hitting them with ranged weapons. The only downside is how teeny it is, there’s only 4.5g of product in the whole thing. And the highlighter is deffo more suitable for yellow/olive skintones. Super Pigmented, Easy to Blend and Long lasting! Both the highlight and contour last all day without me setting it with a powder contour and highlight. The contour colour is perfect, it’s similar to Tom Ford’s but slightly more taupe, the consistency of this is what I was expecting from Tom Ford’s. It’s the most creamy dreamy contour and highlight kit I’ve used. Kevyn Aucoin always meets my expectations and their Creamy Glow Sculpting Duo is the one. Tom Ford just cannot compare to my love of Kevyn Aucoin. I don’t think I can even call this a cream contouring product, its poop coloured slightly less slippery Vaseline. This isn’t pigmented enough, its too sheer for a strong contour.Sometimes it can be hard to blend too because it can take some foundation off and unlike most cream contouring products I’ve used, this just isn’t creamy. Its still super emollient not as emollient as the highlight and doesn’t look shiny on the skin either. I don’t like warm contours but that’s a personal opinion. The “Shade” side- I didn’t hate this as much, its an okay colour but can at times look too orange on the skin. I’m so tempted to see if Vaseline gives the same result lol. Its also too silver for my liking, its not obvious on me, but I imagine on deeper skintones the silver will be more obvious. When applied the highlighter does give a nice glow without any shimmer & doesn’t emphasise imperfections at all etc but it tends not to last very long (I did a swatch about 15 minutes ago and its faded) and doesn’t work well when applying on top of heavier matte foundations. Much too slippery too last on the skin unless you had mature or very very dry skin. The first thing I noticed was how emollient this was, especially the highlighter. Like Vaseline emollient. Not exactly the most impressive for the price tag keeping in mind the Makeup Revolution Matte Malibu Blush Stick is £5 for 12g and the CHANEL Soleil Tan Bronzer is £32 for 30g. There is 14g of product (so 7g contour and 7g highlight). It is indeed very pretty looking but to me it feels very light (almost cheap), but it is convenient to carry around and has a huge mirror inside too, with “Tom Ford” imprinted across the bottom. On with the review- this product comes housed in the typical luxurious Tom Ford packaging with a suede sleeve. Well not unfortunate cus why would you want to buy this crap. This comes in a lighter shade (Intensity 1) but not a darker shade, which is unfortunate on those with deeper skin tones. ![]() The Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate in Intensity 2 is £57.00 available from all Tom Ford stockists. ![]() Jebao Wavemaker PP Series wireless, super silent wavemaker features 8 different flow rates of between 170 litres.
